Over the past 5 months, conversions from social networks to media websites have increased 8-10 times
Euromaidan, which began in November 2013 and turned from a peaceful protest into an armed confrontation between the population and the Yanukovych regime, has radically changed the interaction of people with news information.
Back in September 2013, only about 10-15% of the daily audience of the Ukrainian Internet read at least one news item on socio-political issues. So no more than 1.5-2 million Ukrainian Internet users watch the news every day.
Now the situation is different. 1.5-2 million is the audience only of one media “Ukrayinska Pravda”, and the total daily audience of Ukrainian media is already approaching 7 million, this is a unique audience (that is, if the user visited today and UE, and TSN.ua, we count it as one user).
Social networks played a critical role in such a sharp increase in traffic.
In October 2013, according to Liveinternet, the daily traffic from social networks to Ukrainian media sites amounted to 180-200 thousand conversions. In February-March 2014, this figure increased to 2-2.5 million conversions per day.
Average daily traffic:
Twitter traffic has increased significantly. In October 2013, most Ukrainian news sites did not consider Twitter a source of traffic at all, and now it generates 150-250 thousand conversions daily.
It is also interesting to see how Facebook and Twitter have “eaten” VKontakte in the last 2 years. Back in early 2012, the share of VKontakte in total traffic to news media was about 60%. Now – less than 30%:
Transitions from Facebook are growing not only to news but also to all other sites. In January-March 2014, for the first time in all measurements, the share of traffic from Facebook to UAnet sites exceeded the traffic from VKontakte:
